- Shut the water offFind the main shut-off or, at minimum, the supply valve to the fixture involved, and close it before anything else.
- Cut the power if neededIf water is touching an outlet, a power bar or the electrical panel, stay clear and only switch off the main breaker if the panel itself is dry and reachable without stepping in water.
- Limit the damageMove what you can out of the wet area and use towels and buckets to slow the water's spread, without treating that as a substitute for shutting the water off.
- Photograph before you clean upTake photos and note when the leak started and when the water was shut off: that's what your insurer will ask for first.
- Call the emergency lineOnce the water is off and the damage documented, call: the after-hours premium, if it applies, is quoted to you before a plumber is dispatched.
